A gold star on a tub
is not decoration
It means a panel of experts tasted that ice cream without knowing who made it, scored it against the best in the country, and it held up.
What is the Golden Scoop?
The Golden Scoop Awards are the UK's competition for ice cream. They are run by the Ice Cream Alliance, the trade body that has supported British ice cream makers for over eighty years.
Once a year, producers from across the country send in samples of their ice cream. Every sample is tasted by expert judges who are not told who made it. The judges score what is in front of them, and the best samples in each class earn a star rating from one to five.
That rating is the whole point. It exists so that you, standing in front of a freezer or a counter, have something reliable to go on.
Why it matters
Ice cream is bought on trust. Two tubs sitting side by side can look almost identical, and there is no way to tell from the packaging which one took months of careful recipe work. Some producers churn small batches from real fruit and real vanilla. Others do not.
A Golden Scoop rating tells you which is which, because it was awarded by people who tasted the ice cream and had no idea whose it was.
