Who runs the Golden Scoop Awards

The Ice Cream Alliance is the UK trade association for ice cream makers, retailers and mobilers. For over eight decades the Alliance has been dedicated to one simple mission: growing and supporting the ice cream industry. From small artisan makers to large scale producers, the goal has always been to help businesses thrive and to bring more people into this vibrant trade.

The Golden Scoop Awards are how that mission shows up in a tub. Each entry is judged and accredited with a 1 to 5 star rating, helping your ice cream stand out from competitors and giving consumers confidence in their choice. A star rating builds trust with customers and works as a marketing tool that can directly boost sales.

Why an award scheme matters

Ice cream is bought on trust. A shopper standing in front of a freezer cabinet has no way of knowing which tub took months of recipe work and which was bought in. An independent, blind judged rating closes that gap. It rewards the producers doing the hard work and gives customers a reason to choose them.

Recognition is given at both regional and national levels, ensuring excellence is celebrated across the UK. And for one outstanding entrant, the highest honour awaits: the coveted Golden Scoop National Champion title, reserved for an ice cream maker who demonstrates exceptional skill, consistency and all round excellence.

Feedback that raises the standard

The awards are not only a competition. Every entrant, whether they win or not, receives a full breakdown of how their product was scored: the marks for appearance, texture and flavour, and score graphs showing exactly where the product sat against its class. That is far more useful than a rosette.

Producers act on it. Recipes get adjusted, textures get refined, and entries come back stronger the following year. Over successive competitions that compounds into something bigger than any single result, which is a measurable lift in the quality of ice cream being made across Britain and Ireland. Raising the standard of the trade is the point of the Alliance, and the Golden Scoop feedback is one of the most direct ways it happens.

Independence and fairness

Every sample is judged blind. Tubs arrive with a pre applied label and nothing else. Judges do not know which business made which sample, and scores are recorded independently before any total is calculated. Entrants who mark their tubs in any way are disqualified, because anonymity is the whole basis of the result.

The panel

Meet the judges

Entries are scored by two panels of four. Each judge marks out of 100 points, so every sample carries a maximum score of 400. Panels assess complete classes so that comparisons within a class are always like for like.
